The first time I heard Christopher Arruda, I was driving north on Clark Street in Vancouver on a summer day. When Chris’ song Destroyer came on the radio I had to roll the windows up. It was the summer of 2010 and Chris was being played because he’d just become one of the top 20 contestants in the Peak Performance Project. Having been a contestant in the project the year before, I was quite curious who would be jumping through the hoops next.

I became a fan of Chris’ pretty much instantly. His single had a bounce and pomp to it that reminded me of one of my favorite bands, Queen. Having heard more of his stuff, I can assure you that he doesn’t really sound like Queen though I would argue that his vocals and piano work may be just as strong as Freddie Mercury’s… But why am I talking about Freddie Mercury again. I should be talking about Mr. Arruda. Actually, I’ll shut up. Watch the video and let his music speak for itself.

Christopher Arruda will be playing with me next Saturday March 31st at the Interurban Gallery (1 East Hastings). Also on the bill Adrian Glynn and the string quartet Four on the Floor.

Tickets are on sale at Zulu, Scratch and Red Cat Records for a cool $10. ($12 at the door)
